A flag for Mr. Banks
“Hello, Mr. Banks, “called Jim.
Jill smiled and said, “Be sure to hang your flag out early tomorrow. You know the Flag Day parade will march right up this street about ten o’clock.”
Then the children saw that Mr. Banks looked very sad. They wondered what could be the trouble with their old friend.
In a few seconds they found out.
Mr. Banks said, “I don’t have a flag to hang on my porch tomorrow. My old one has a hole in it. I’ll get a big new flag sometime, but not by tomorrow.”
“So that’s the trouble!” Thought Jim.
He knew Mr. Banks loved to fly a flag.
All the children in the neighborhood knew that Mr. Banks loved his country and his country’s flag. He had taken trips all over the country when he saw young. He had told the children about the places he had seen.
Jim and Jill loved to hear the stories. It made them sad to know that Mr. Banks did not have a flag to hang on his porch.
As the children walked on, Jill said, “I wish we had a flag Mr. Banks could use. He just has to have a flag to put on his porch tomorrow.”
Jim said, “We’ll try to find one for him, Jill.”
Just then Linda wise and her mother came along. Jim told them quickly what had happened to Mr. Banks’ flag. Then Jim said,”do you have two flags? Do you have one Mr. Banks can use?””I’m sorry, we don’t,” said Mrs. Wise. “We don’t even own one flag. We are going now to see about buying a flag.” Linda and her mother left.
Jim said to Jill,”if we take the time and the trouble, I know we can find a flag for Mr. Banks to use.”
Jim and Jill went to house after house. They asked all their friends, but no one they knew had two flags. No one they knew had a flag Mr. Banks could use.
“What will we do now?” asked Jill.” We’ll go home and get our money,” said Jim. “We’ll go to the dime store and buy a flag for Mr. Banks. It won’t be a big one. But he’ll like a little flag better that no flag at all.”
The children went home and shook the money out of their banks. Then they ran to the dime store.
“let’s each buy a little flag,” said Jill.” then Mr. Banks will have a flag to put on each side of his porch.”
“Wonderful!” cried Jim. “And we’ll take them to him early in the morning.”
The next day Jim and Jill met Linda on the way to Mr. Banks’ house. She had a flag for Mr. Banks, too.
When the children gave the flags to their old friend, he saw very happy. He nailed the three little flags on his porch as quickly as he could.
Soon more children came with flags for old Mr. Banks. Many boys and girls had decided that he must have a flag. Many children had taken their money to buy small flags for him.
Mr. Banks put the flags up quickly. In a few minutes eight little flags were flying on the right side of the porch. Eight more were flying on the left side.
Then Mr. Banks and the children sat down to wait for the parade. The porch was crowded, but every one found a place to sit without much trouble. Eight boys sat on steps. Eight girls sat on the porch wit Mr. Banks.
The crowd on the porch waved as the marchers went past. The parade was a long one, but not too long for Mr. Banks and his friends.
“Thank you, children,” said Mr. Banks when the parade was over. “Thank you for this wonderful day. I always knew that wonderful people lived in this big, wonderful country of ours.”
