The wooden fence
“Can you see your dad, Steve?”
Asked john winters.
“Not yet,” replied Steve young.
“My dad runs the biggest shovel behind this wooden fence. But we can’t see him work from here.”
John cried, “Say, Steve! There must be a gate some where for the machines to go through. We can’t see much from here, but we could see through an open gate. Let’s find a gate!”
Steve and john got up and ran around a corner. Then saw a gate and watchman standing by it.
The boys ran toward the gate. Just as they got there, a truck rolled out.
The watchman waved the big truck on through the gate.
Then he turned to Steve and john and said, “sorry, boys. You’ll be in the way here. Trucks go in and out this gate all day long.”
“We wanted to watch my dad work ‘said Steve. “He runs the biggest shovel behind that fence.”
The watchman said, “You must mean big Steve young.”
Just then a truck rolled up outside the gate. Then another and another.
While the watchman was showing the trucks whereto go, the boys turned and walked back around the high fence.
Soon they saw a box near the fence.
“Let’s stand on that a box and tried to reach the top of the fence,” said Steve.
He got up on the box and tried to reach the top of the fence to pull him up. But he couldn’t reach it.
As Steve jumped down, both boys saw the watchman hurrying toward them.
The watchman hurrying toward them.
The watchman waved and called, “I’ve been looking for you boys. I went to help you see big Steve.”
The man walked to the wooden fence and began to cut a hole.
In a second, Steve said, “I know what you’re doing! You’re making a hole in the fence for us to look through!”
The watchman said, “I’m going to make two holes. We have to have two holes for two boys to look through.”
The holes in the fence were placed just right-not too high and too law. The boys could look through them and see everything that was happening.
Steve shouted, “There’s my dad! He’s running the biggest shovel.”
John cried, “I see him!”
The boys watched for a long time. At last Steve said, “we’d better go home now, john. Dad will be surprised when he knows I saw him work today! I can’t wait to tell him.”
That night said to his father, “I saw you work today. John did, too.
“We tried to look under the fence, but it was too near the ground. We tried to look over the fence, but we didn’t have anything high enough to stand on. We couldn’t reach the top.
“Then a friendly watchman came a long and cut two holes in the wooden fence for us.
The holes were just right-not too high and not too law. John and I saw every thing then. We could see through the high wooden fence just fine!”

Keep out of the water
[/GRADE]Four boys were riding bikes toward the park. They were going there to play and eat lunch.
Tom said, “I’m glad I could go today. My mother thought that there would be too much water on the ground after the rain last night. But I told her I would keep out of the water. So mother said I could go.”
The four boys rode into the park. They jumped off their bikes and ran as fast as they could to play ground.
The boys saw that they couldn’t have a basketball game .there was water in some low places under the basket.
John gave tom a friendly push toward one of the low, wet places.
“Stop it! I told my mother I wouldn’t get wet!” cried tom.
Steve said, “I guess all of us told our mothers the same thing.
So we’ll have to go some where else to play.”
“Maybe we can play on the big slide, “said bill.
Steve said, “Let’s go see. I’ll race all of you to slide!”
A way he raced, with the others racing after him. Steve reached the slide first.
As he started up the steps, he heard tom call, “stop! Stop! We can’t use the slide, Steve! We’ll get wet here, too. Let’s try the merry-go-round.”
There was no water on the ground near the merry-go-round. So the boys rode on it until they were hungry enough to eat their lunch.
After lunch they went to see if they could play basketball. By this time the water was gone from the low places. So they tried for baskets until it was time to go home.
As the boys rode a long on their bikes, tom said, “we had fun today, and we stayed out of the water, too. We said we wouldn’t get wet, and we didn’t.”
When tom rode his bike into his yard, he saw his little brother Billy pointing a garden hose toward the car. No water was running the car. No water was running from the hose.
Tom called,”hi,there, billy!are you pretending to wash the car?”
Billy turned to to answer his big brother. at that second, water started splashing from the hose.
“Drop that hose, Billy!” shouted tom.
“Drop it! Drop it, I say!”
At tom shouts, the boys’ father came racing around the house.
He took a look at tom and said, “I see Billy didn’t drop the hose in time. I’m sorry, son. I was turning on the water so that Billy could help me wash the car.
But it looks as if you got washed!”
Tom was so wet and looked so funny that his father began to laugh.
Then tom started to laugh. “Look at me!” he cried. “I’m wet from head to foot! I told mother this morning that I would keep out of the water. And I did while I was in the park. But now I’m all wet! What will mother say?”
“Nothing, said his father, laughing and pointing to the house. “Your mother has been looking out the window. She knows what happened! She is laughing as hard as the rest of us.”

Something interesting
[/GRADE]“wait a second, Tim, and I’ll walk to school with you,” called john.
As the boys walked along, john saw a small box in Tim’s hand. John asked, “What’s in that box?”
“Something interesting,” said Tim with a friendly smile. “it’s round. It’s blue. It’s made of glass. I’m going to show it in our room today. But no one will know what it really is until I tell.”
As soon as school began, john told the teacher about Tim’s little box. “Tim has something interesting to show us,” john said. “I wish we could see it now. May we, Mrs. Field?”
“Yes,” replied the teacher, “we may if Tim is ready to show it to us.”
Tim held up something for everyone to see. It was a pretty blue color. It was round. It was made of glass.
When no one could guess what it was, Mrs. Field said, “tell us about it, Tim.
Tell us what it is.”
Tim pointed to the blue glass and said,
“This is a horse’s glass eye.”
All the other children laughed.
“I think Tim has more to tell,” said the teacher. “Let’s hear what it is.”
Mrs. Field gave Tim a friendly smile, and Tim started talking again.
“This eye really is a horse’s glass eye,”
He said. “But I didn’t say what kind of horse. A long, long time ago this eye was on a merry-go-round horse.”
Everyone was interested now.
“tell us a bout it,” said Steve.”
Tim said, “This glass eye is very old.
My grandfather had it when he was a little boy.
“Long ago, merry-go-round horses were wooden. Men made them all by hand and painted them pretty colors. The men tried to make each horse as beautiful as they could. I think the horse that had this eye must have been a very beautiful merry-go-round horse”
John said, “it’s lots of fun to find out interesting things like that. Thanks for telling us, Tim.”
Then john said to the teacher, “we laughed at Tim because we thought that he was talking about a live horse. We never once thought of any other kind of horse. I guess the laugh is on us.”
“The laugh is on us all right!”Said Steve. “And it’s a horse laugh!”

How Susan remembered
“it’s lunchtime, boys and girls,” said Mrs. Field. “it‘s Susan’s turn to be first in the lunchroom line today.”
All the children but Susan pond got up.
She just held up her hand.
“What is it?” asked Mrs. Field.
Susan said, “I forgot my lunch money. I thought of it just a minute ago.”
The teacher said, “I will let you have some money, Susan. You can bring my money to me in the morning.”
The next morning Susan remembered to bring the money for the teacher. She brought her lunch
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Field!” said Susan.
“I put the book by the door last night. I was sure I would see it and remember to bring it to school today. But I forgot the book anyway.
“I’ll bring tomorrow. I’ll be sure to remember to bring it tomorrow.”
“All right, dear,” said the teacher.
“Try very hard to remember.”
Every one had a bust day at school.
When it was about Tim to go home, Mrs. Field said, “don’t forget to take the pictures you painted today, children. Your mothers and fathers will want to see them.”
All the boys and all the girls but Susan remembered to take the pictures.
When Susan got home that afternoon, her grandmother was there.
Grandmother pond said, “how big you are, Susan! You are much, much bigger than you were a year ago! Now tell me what you did at school today.”
Suddenly Susan looked unhappy. “All I did was forget!” she said. “I forgot to take a book this morning. I forgot to bring my funny clown picture home this afternoon. I forgot any thing! I wish I could stop forgetting!”
Susan’s grandmother smiled and said, “don’t be unhappy, my dear. All of us forget, and we’re always unhappy when we do. But don’t be unhappy now.
“come to my room with me, Susan, and see what I brought.”
In the bedroom grandmother pointed to some colored dress goods on the bed. She said, “I brought the goods to make dresses for you, Susan. Now I know just what kind to make. I’ll make dresses that will help you remember. I’ll make a pink one for you to wear tomorrow.”
Susan and grandmother pond worked together on the pink dress. First they cut it out. Then grandmother sat down at mother’s machine to work.
Susan watched her grand mother and brought her the things she needed. They worked together the rest of the afternoon.
They worked after dinner, too.
By bedtime the pink dress was ready to wear. Susan hurried to put it on so that her mother and father could see it.
“See the pockets in my new dress,”
Said Susan.”I’ll carry lunch money in the little pocket. I’ll carry my handkerchief in the bigger pocket. “And I can carry school papers or book in the biggest pocket.
“I won’t forget a thing when I wear the pink dress.
“I wish I’d had remembering dress a long, long time ago. But thank you, grandmother, for making this pink one for me now.
“I’ll start this minute to remember all the things I have to take to school with me tomorrow.”

Who owns this hat?
“A real fireman’s hat!” shouted john.
“I’ll keep it! I can have a lot of fun playing fireman with this hat.”
“It’s my hat, too!” cried David. “We were right together, and saw it at the same time. You just picked it up before I could get it.”
David tried to pull the hat out of john’s hands, but john held on to it.
“Let go of my hat!” shouted john.
Just then john’s older brother jerry came running across the yard . he called to the two younger boys, “what’s all the shouting about?”
John said, “David is trying to take my fireman’s hat. It’s not a toy! It ‘s a real one I found in the street!”
“I found it at the same time he did,”
Said David. “So it’s my hat, too.”
“All right!” said jerry. “Now listen to me a minute, boys. One of our city firemen lost that hat. Did you see a fire engine go by?”
David said, “We didn’t see one, but we thought we heard a fire engine a little while ago.”
“The man who lost that hat will have to buy another one,” said jerry. “All the firemen in our city have to buy their own hats. I’m sure it takes lots of money to buy a fireman’s hat.”
The two younger boys began to look unhappy as they listened to jerry.
At last john turned to David and said, “I think we should try to find out who owns this hat.”
“I think so, too,” said David. “Maybe the owner of the hat is at that firehouse on Green Street.”
John said, “Let’s go there together this afternoon and take the hat.”
That afternoon john and David went to the firehouse. A fire engine was out in front when the boys got there. Two firemen were washing the engine.
John held up the hat. “My friend and I found this over on spring road,” he said. “It’s a real fireman’s hat. Does anyone here own it?”
One man called to some one inside the firehouse, “step out here, red!”
A fireman with red hair walked out. He looked pleased when he saw what the boys were carrying.
“That’s my hat!”He cried. “I hoped someone would find it. I’ve hat for almost ten years now. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to get a new one.
“Thanks for bringing it to me.”
He shook hands with john and David.
“Maybe you two would like to try being firemen for a little while,” he said.
“oh, yes!” cried both boys.
The boys sat on a real fire engine and pretended to go around corners on two wheels. They pretended to ring the bell. They pretended they were going as fast as the wind.
When at last they had to go home, they told all the firemen good-by.
Red called, “come and visit us again this summer, boys.”
“We will!” cried David.
John said, “We’ll keep our eyes open for lost hats, too!”
“A real fireman’s hat!” shouted john.

What Pete found out
“hi, Pete!” said bob gray. “Jim and I are going to the city pool to swim. Do you want to go with us?”
Pete wished he could say, “sure! Sure I’ll go with you. I’ll swim across that pool faster than anyone.”
But Pete was afraid of the water. So all he said was, “I have something to do uptown. See you later!”
Then he raced off toward town.
When Pete reached town, he walked along looking in all the store windows. He said to himself, “A fine summer I’m going to have if all my friends go to the pool every day of the week!”
Pete saw Mr. Ball sitting inside his clock store. He saw working on a clock.
Pete liked Mr. Ball. So he went in to visit him.
“Glad to see you,” said Mr. Ball. He could tell that Pete was unhappy, but he said nothing about it.
He went on working on the clock. Pete watched him work.
Before long Pete said,”mr. ball, have you ever wanted to do something, but you couldn’t make yourself do it?”
“Yes, pete,”replied mr. ball. “That has happened to every one.”
Pete said, “I mean something easy t hat everybody can do. Like------“
“Like what, Pete?” asked Mr. Ball.
“Like something!”
Said Pete. “I know how to move my arms and legs the right way could do that last summer want to jump into the pool, stick my face in the water, and swim the way my friends do.
But I just can’t do it. I’m afraid.”
Mr. Ball gave Pete a friendly smile. “Maybe I can help you,” he said.
He put down the clock and began to look for something. Soon he handed a penny to Pete. It was almost like other pennies, but it was bigger.
“Perhaps this lucky penny is what you need, Pete,” said Mr. Ball.
Mr. Ball told Pete all about the penny. “Long ago, people used pennies like this to buy things,” he said. “This one has been a good-luck penny for many years. My grandfather and my father carried it.
They thought it brought them luck.
“I’m going to let you carry it, Pete. Maybe it will bring you luck, too.”
Pete asked, “Do you mean I’ll be lucky enough to swim if I carry it?”
Mr. Ball said, “maybe you will, Pete I hope so. And if you are really lucky, you’ll find out something.”
Pete thanked Mr. Ball and ran home with the penny .he put it in the pocket of his new red swimming trunks.
Pocket.”
At first Pete thought that he would go right to the pool and try the lucky penny. Then he decided to go early the next day.
Pete got to the city pool very early the next morning. His friends were not there. But he saw high schoolboys swimming at the deep end of the pool.
Jerry winters waved to Pete and began to swim across the pool.
Pete watched him and thought, “How easy swimming looks when jerry does it hope it will be that easy for me now that I have my lucky penny.”
Pete made sure the lucky penny was in his pocket. Then he began to slide into the water. It was cold, but it was not very deep.
He held on to the side of the pool with both hands and kicked his feet. Next he turned sideways and faced the deep end of the pool. He held on with just one hand, kicked his feet, and moved one arm in the water.
He heard jerry call from the deep end, ”Pete, you are almost swimming.”
Soon Pete started to move both arms and kick. “I’m swimming!” he thought. “The lucky penny did it! Maybe I can open my eyes under water, too.”
He tried and found that he could. Then he began swimming again.
In a short while Pete left the pool and went to see Mr. Ball at the clock store. “You were right, Mr. Ball, “said the Pete”that lucky penny did it! I can swim with it in my pocket.”
When Pete saw Jim and bob going to the pool the next day, he called, “wait for me! I’m going to swimming.”
He ran to get his new trunks. Then he remembered that he had not put them outside to dry. So he put his old trunks under his arm, and off he ran.
At the pool the boys got ready as fast as they could and raced to the water.
B ob jumped in first. Pete jumped into the water right behind him.
Down went Pete. For just a second he thought that he would never come up. But up he came. Then he kicked and splashed to the side of the pool. It was only a short way, but he was swimming. Pete wanted to show the lucky penny to the boys. He reached for his pocket. But there was no pocket in his trunks! These were his old ones. The new ones were at home, and so was the penny.
Pete was scared for a second because he had been swimming without the penny then he laughed and began to swim again.
Later that day Pete took the penny to Mr. Ball at the clock store. “Thanks for letting me carry it, “said Pete. “At first I thought that I couldn’t swim without the penny to help me. But then I was really lucky. I found out that I don’t need the penny. I can swim with out it.
“This is going to be a fine summer!”

A busy week
Bunny and Benny bell jumped out of bed early one Saturday morning.
“Today is the day!” sang bunny.
Penny sang, “Today is the day we go to grandmother’s house!”
Soon the girls were dressed and ready to go. They ran to the kitchen to tell their mother and father good-by.
Mrs. Bell laughed and said, “look at the clock, girls. It’s only seven o’clock! Grandmother won’t come to get you this early. Sit down and eat breakfast.”
After breakfast the girls ran outside to wait for grandmother bell to drive up. Penny called to a friend who lived across the street, “good-by Jill. We’re going to visit our grandmother.”
When grandmother came driving up, the girls ran and jumped into her car. Mr. and Mrs. Bell waved good-by from the door. Then the two girls rode off with their grandmother.
Soon penny said, “I hope we are almost at your house, grandmother.”
“Why?” asked grandmother bell.
“Because we have so much fun there,” penny replied. “You let us dress up in old dresses and hats.”
Bunny said, “You tell us stories about when you were a little girl.”
Benny said, “and we each get to sleep in a room of our own.”
It was only a short drive. Soon they were at their grandmother’s house.
Grandmother asked, “Which of these bedrooms will each of you take? Pick a room, girls.”
“I’ll take the blue one,” said bunny.
Penny said, “I’ll take the yellow room across from it. May we play dress-up after we hang up our things?”
“The dress-up things are in a box in the blue room,” said grandmother. “You may play dress-up all you whish as soon as you hang up your clothes. Come and show me how you look when you are all dressed up.”
In a short time the girls went to find their grandmother. She said, “How fine you look! I used to wear those dresses to parties.”
Penny cried, “Tell about the parties!” grandmother told a few stories a bout some parties she went to when she was a young woman.
“Now tell about things you did when you were only seven,” said bunny.
“yes, “said penny. “Tell about when you were seven years old like us.”
Then grandmother told the girls about her birthday party when she was seven.
At lunch penny said, “I wish I could stay here all summer, grandmother.”
“I wish I could, too,” said bunny. Grandmother Bell smiled. “Wouldn’t you miss your mother and your dad?” she asked.
“oh, no, grandmother!” bunny replied. “Not when you tell us stories!”
“Wouldn’t you miss Jill or your new red bikes?” asked grandmother.
Penny said, “No, not when you let us dress up in your old clothes!”
Grandmother Bell laughed and said, “Wait until next Saturday. I think you will be ready to go home by then.”
That afternoon the girls dressed up in more old clothes, and grandmother told them more stories.
Every day for a week penny and bunny played dress-up. Every day for a week their grandmother told stories to the girls.
Grandmother knew lots of stories to tell.
At last it was Saturday morning again. Penny and punny jumped out of bed and dressed quickly. Then they ran down to the kitchen.
“Today is the day you go home,” said grandmother with a smile.”But your mother won’t be here for a while. Let’s have a nice breakfast.”
After breakfast the two girls sat on the porch and watched for their mother to drive up. Grandmother sat on the porch with them.
The girls wanted to start home as soon as their mother got there.
“Do you went to see your dad?” asked grandmother with laugh.
“yes, we do,” said bunny. “We want to see Jill, too. And we want to ride our bikes.”
Penny said,” we even want to sleep in our own big room with two beds. We thought we wouldn’t miss all these things. But we did.”
“We love to visit you, grandmother, “said bunny. “but now we want to go home again.”
