The parade
“Left, right! Left, right! Left, right!”sang Linda wise.
Left, right! Left, right! Went her feet as she marched out the big front door.
Left, right! Left, right! She marched up the street.
Bill stone was sitting on the step at his house next door when Linda came marching along.
“Hi. Linda!” called bill. “What are you doing? Playing a game?”
“I’m pretending that I’m in a parade,” answer Linda.
Bill said, “I saw a parade on TV this morning. The marchers were all dressed up in funny clothes.”
“I saw that parade, too!” cried Linda.
“While I was watching it, I wished that I could be in a parade. So now I’m just pretending that I’m in one.”
“Why just pretend?” asked bill. “Why couldn’t we have a parade?”
Linda looked at bill in surprise. Then she said, “I guess wee could have a parade. I’m sure we could find funny old clothes to wear. Maybe we could get some other children to dress up and march with us.”
Bill said, “Let’s start our parade at two o’clock in front of your place.
“You tell your friends. I’ll tell them right now.”
Before she ran home, Linda told some girl about the parade.
Then she hurried home and told her mother about it. “I want to pretend I’m a clown,” said Linda. “Can you help me dress up like a clown? I went to be a funny clown.”
Mrs. Wise opened a box of old clothes and took out things for Linda to wear.
Linda put them on, and then her mother painted a clown smile on Linda’s face.
It was just two o’clock when Linda ran out to the sidewalk. She saw some marchers waiting in a line .ant to start the parade without
Linda wondered if bill stone had come yet. She didn’t w ant to start the parade without him.
“maybe that white rabbit at the head of the line is bill, “she said to herself.
“I’ll see if it is.”
“Hi bill!”Called Linda to the rabbit.”

“Let’s start the parade.”
“Oh, linda,”laughed the rabbit. “I’m not bill. I’m Ellen.”
A brown bear was second in line. It was wearing brown boots.
Linda thought the boots looked like bill’s boots. So she said,”hi,bill!”
“I’m not bill,” said the brown bear.”I’m john winters.”
Jus then Linda got a good look at the funny scarecrow behind the bear. It was wearing a man’s coat and a cowboy hat. The hat was just like one that Linda had seen bill wear.
“I’m sure you’re bill,.
“”said Linda to scarecrow.
The scarecrow gave its he ad a shake.
“Oh, no,” it said. “I’m patty.”
Linda looked at the elephant at the end of the line. “If that elephant isn’t bill, then bill hasn’t come yet,” she thought.
Linda went up to the elephant’s head and pulled one of its ears.
“Are you bill?” she asked.
“I’m Tim small,” came the reply. “I’m new in this neighborhood.”
“is that bill stone right behind you?” asked Linda.
“no,” Tim replied. “that’spete right behind me. He’s my brother.”
Linda said, “I guess bill hasn’t come yet. We’ll have to wait for him. He should be at the head of the parade.”
Just then Linda looked down and saw the elephant’s feet.
“That elephant has six feet!”\she said. “One, two- three, four-five, six feet!
There are three boys in there!
“Bill, are you there?”
“Yes, Linda,” laughed bill. “I’m here you don’t have to wait for me. But I can’t march at the head of our parade.
I have to be here at the end. The very tail end!”:15:(f)

Here comes the bus
“Now where did I put my new gloves?” said Mrs. Gray to herself.
Just then the door opened. Bob gray and his sister walked in.
“Hi, mother!” called bob. “Is much ready yet?”
“Yes, it is,” his mother replied. “You and patty will find your lunch in the kitchen. I’m gong downtown to have lunch with your father today. I went to wear my new white gloves. I’m trying to think where I put them.”
Patty gave one quick look around the room.”I don’t see your gloves, mother,” she said. “Did you bring them with you from your bed room?”
“I’m sure I did,” answered Mrs. Gray. “I know I had both gloves in my hand when I had both gloves in my hand when I opened my hatbox. If I’m going to wear those gloves, I must find them right a way. I went to catch the next bus downtown.”
“I’ll help look for them, mother,” said patty.”I’ll look on the floor and under things. You look on top of things.”
Bob said, “I’ll stand at the window and watch for the bus. I’ll tell you both when it turns the corner into our street.”
Before long bob said, “have you found the gloves yet? The bus is turning the corner now.”
Mrs. Gray said, “I’ll just have to go on to lunch without my new white gloves.
Good-by, children!”
The children watched Mrs. Gray hurry toward the bus stop at the corner.
Suddenly bob said, “look at those white things on the top of mother’s hat, patty!
What are they?”
“Just flowers, “patty replied.
“Are you sure they are?” asked bob.
“They don’t look like flowers.”
“They aren’t flowers!” cried patty.
Then she and bob began to laugh.
Bob opened the window. He and patty waved and shouted, “Mother! Your hat!”
Mrs. Gray was thinking about getting on the bus and didn’t hear the children.
But a young woman who was standing at the bus stop heard them.
The young women said to Mrs. Gray,
“I think those children in that second – floor window are calling you.’
Mrs. gray looked up at patty and bob in the second-floor window.
“your gloves!” patty called. “They’re on your hat, mother!”
Mrs. Gray put her hand on the top of her hat. Then she smiled and stepped up into the bus.
As the bus began to move, she waved to her children. In her hand were two white gloves……
