How does gouce elicit sympathy for his main character , the boy , through out the story??

Joyce elicit sympathy for the boy throughout the story by portraying him as a sensitive, onely boy who fails achieving his goals due to outer forces he cannot control .

First, Joyce provides the boy with a specific , dramatic conflict ( the need to impress magan sister with a gift from araby ).thovgh apparently minor , this desire is compelling because it is so intensely felt by the boy . he cares , so the reader cares. Then, the writer puts delaying obstacles in the way of the boy in for instance : the wait for Saturday it self , and then for the uncles return from work .Joyce then expands time and stretches it out by piling on the trivial details that torture the boy as he waits like the ticking of the clock, the cries of the prot a gonist,s play mates out side , the gossiping of mrs . mercer , the scratching of the uncles key in the lock , and the rocking of the hallstand . then the unclemusteat dinner and be remin twice of araby , after which begins the a gnizingly slow journey it self , which seems to take place in slow moton ,like a night mare . when the boy finally arrives at the bazaar ,too late the reader wants so badly for the boy to buy something , anything , for mangan sister that when he says: "no thank you " to the English woman who speals to him , it is heart breaking there fore , when the narrator (the boy) tells the readers that his eyes " ……. With English and anger" the eyes of the readers burn, too, out of sympathy for the heartbreaking situation of the boy
