Parents who are from minority ethnic or cultural groups generally find it more difficult to interact with their children’s teachers. Language difficulties may play a part in this as does parents apprehension about relating to teachers who are mainly from the mainstream cultural group. There are often also value differences, as in many cultures collaboration between parents and teachers is not seen as something which is necessary or even desirable.

Teacher need to learn more about the cultural norms and values of parents from different cultural groups so that they can work more effectively with them. They should be prepared to adapt their expectations and means of communication in order to optimize the involvement of these parent.
